What is Excess Coverage?
Excess coverage increased a dentist’s professional liability limit to provide further protection in the event of a large potential claim. Excess coverage will give you the ultimate peace of mind. The following are just some of the scenarios that can affect you and your Dental Practice:
- Nuisance or baseless claims due to a false idea that a dentist will simply pay to avoid the cost of litigation.
- Malpractice suits often require costly specialized council and expert witnesses.
- Lawsuits for malpractice often don't settle quickly, especially if there are multiple defendants.
- Damages exceeding your primary limit may affect your personal wealth and asset.
Example:
If a dentist had a $10m claim the first $2m would be covered by their base required professional lability and the additional $8m would be covered by the dentist’s excess limit provided it was purchased.

- This is offered through various insurers including: Chubb Insurance Company of Canada, Berkley Canada, Beazley Canada and Lloyds of London.
- To protect dentists from very large potential claims, a dentist can purchase up to $23m bringing their total coverage up to $25m.
- Provides additional peace of mind for dentists who feel they could have a large potential claim, practice in a specialized field with a higher risk of injury or require additional limit to practice in other Provinces.
